Abstract Rubbing faults in rotor systems have increasingly become a primary cause of rotating machinery failures. To address the challenge of real-time monitoring of rotor system operating conditions and timely detection of rubbing faults, a condition monitoring method for rubbing rotor systems based on digital twin technology is proposed. A digital twin model of a single-disc rotor, incorporating rubbing faults and supported by plain bearing oil film forces, was constructed. The vibration signals obtained from simulations using this model were then compared with the test bench results, showing good consistency, which demonstrated that the digital twin model can effectively reflect the operational state of the bearing. Experimental results indicate that digital twin technology can significantly enhance the accuracy and real-time capabilities of fault monitoring.
