Abstract A electrochromic material based on vanadium substituted phosphotungstate (K7P2W16V2O62·18H2O)and congo red has been prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) method, and characterized by UV-visible spectra, and cyclic voltammograms. It shows that the growth process of composite materials is uniform and stable. The composite film displays adjustable colors and undergoes transitions from red to maroon ,then to red, resulting in an optical contrast of 20.11 % and a coloration efficiency of 33 cm2 C-1. Furthermore, the switching times were 4.74 s for coloration, and 8.16 s for bleaching.
