Abstract Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) was synthesized by precipitation method with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and n-butyraldehyde, and hydrochloric acid as catalysts. The effects of m(n-butylaldehyde):m(PVA), catalyst dosage, dosage of emulsifier, reaction time (tL) at low temperature, high temperature reaction temperature (TH) and reaction time (tH) at high temperature on the aldolization was discussed, the results showed that the optimum process conditions were as follows: m(n-butylaldehyde):m(PVA) was 2.2:1, catalyst dosage was 13% (total weight of n-butylaldehyde and PVA), dosage of emulsifier was 1.9 %(total weight of n-butylaldehyde and PVA), reaction time was 3 h at 3-7 ℃, reaction time was 1 h at 45 ℃, the acetal degree of polyvinyl butyral is 88.47 %.
