Abstract Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) was used as source material and hydrochloric acid or ammonia was used as catalyst to prepare PMMA/SiO2 hybrid sol-gel materials by free radical polymerization and in-situ sol-gel process. The mechanism and synthesis methods of sol-gel process were discussed. The factors such as hydrochloric acid, water and temperature on reaction rate and structure of the gel were reviewed which provide data for further research and practical application.
