Abstract Applied talent cultivation has become the consensus of most provincial colleges and universities. Based on the educational conceptual framework of oneness of knowledge and action, this paper applies the method of fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to explore the joint effect and interaction of multiple factors on the cultivation of applied talents in economics and management. By analyzing 465 data samples from a school, this paper finds that: (1) the factors affecting the cultivation of applied talents in economics and management are characterized by multiple concurrency and different paths; (2) There are seven group paths to successfully cultivate high-quality applied talents in economics and management, which are specifically categorized into the following three types: the transformational path of "learning by doing", the inherited path of "learning by applying", and the innovative path of "learning by competing"; (3) There is a complementary and alternative relationship between the influencing factors under the same learning mode, and an alternative relationship between the influencing factors under different learning modes. The findings of this paper have revolutionized the epistemological foundation and methodological basis of the training of applied talents, and deepened the educational conception of oneness of knowledge and action, and also provided practical insights into the cultivation of applied talents.
