In order to achieve the goal of talent training, that is "thick foundation, wide caliber, strong ability, high quality", broad categories of training mode have been carried out in many universities of China. In this paper, the necessity and feasibility of developing broad categories of training mode in the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Jilin Institute of Chemical Technology have been discussed according to the reality. The idea of constructing the curriculum system of materials specialties based on the broad categories of training mode are put forward as well.
